No state gave more to Route 66 — and got more back from it — than Oklahoma.
At 432 miles, Oklahoma held the longest stretch of the original alignment, and it needed it. The Dust Bowl sent hundreds of thousands of Oklahomans west on this highway in the 1930s, whole families packing everything onto trucks and following the road to California because there was nothing left behind. John Steinbeck wrote about it. Woody Guthrie sang about it. But the people who actually drove it just drove it — because that's what survival looked like. The road carried them, and Oklahoma never forgot.
This is the road that carried a people. Some roads do that.
